What to Wear // Rock Your Couple Session

Kate Roberge Photography | Queenstown Elopement, Couple, Engagement Photographer

What to wear to your session is a common question people have for me. If nothing else, keep in mind that your outfit selection should be a reflection of you. Second to that is keeping in mind the location and season of your session. Please don't wear jandals to your July session, it won't go well, promise!

To make things a little easier. I've organized an inspiration board to show you some items that work well in photos!

SOLIDS
Simple is usually best. Try to avoid clothes with crazy graphics, logos, or anything that distracts from how hot you are! Also, think about what your house looks like, it your walls are all white with blue plaid accents.. don't wear red plaid or it will look super odd in that room.

AVOID MATCHING
Instead of looking like twins, wear complementary colors or shades of the same hue (like light blue and navy). No need to look like you both belong in a band together. I even tend to tell couples to think about the TYPES of clothing you are wearing. Ie. Don't both wear button up shirts and jeans- even if they are different colours, it's a slippery slope.

BE COMFORTABLE
Wear something that complements your figure and that your partner thinks you look amazing in. Help one another choose things that you love. Don't wear clothes that are too tight, too loose or fit uncomfortably. It's easier to be relaxed and natural with your significant other (and me!) if you aren't constantly checking or pulling at your clothing. For the ladies, think about bra and underwear lines too!

DIVERSIFY
Bring two completely different outfits. It's great to have one dressy option and another that is more comfortable. No matter what. make sure it‘s something that is YOU.

COLOUR
I’m all about neutrals and primary/ secondary colours. Think natural tones and complimentary colours to your partner. Patterns are cool if they are subtle and neutral tones. Just keep in mind that you don’t want your outfit competing with you and your significant other in photos. Again, think about your home if you're going to be getting your photos printed. If you're bedroom is all red, don't wear green or you'll be celebrating Christmas all year round (I personally would be fine with this but am aware not everyone loves Christmas on the level I do)!

HAIR + MAKEUP
I personally think less is more in this category. We are taking photos of YOU, not some dolled up version of you. I totally, 100%, definitely understand wanting to look amazing for your session but I always recommend dressing up like you're going for brunch with your besties. Nice, but not dressed up. If you would like any recommendations on a makeup and hair artist to hire for your session- I can give you the contact information for the ladies I usually work with and trust!

SHOES
Comfy, warm and walkable. These are the three things you could be thinking about when choosing your shoes for your photoshoot. I'm totally cool with heels, but please stay away from anything over 3 inches. If you can't decide if your footwear will work, put them on, try to run up stairs and if you can and they are still comfy, they're good!

LAYERS
Bags and jackets that you will have to carry are best left behind. I will have my car, and you can leave your things there but ideally you guys would be hands free for our whole session.

FUR FRIENDS
I've already decided that when I am old and bitter I will transition to being only a pet photographer. Petting and cuddling pets is my happy place, for realz. If you have a four legged friend, bring them along! I would love to have them in your photos with you, they deserve a photo as well. And if you are interested in an in home session, they most definitely have to be there! Just keep in mind, it'll take away from our photo time if they are running away- so even though I will love them equally, if your pet is a runner- maybe leave them at home.

And there we go! These are all my tips for picking out your wardrobe. If you still have questions definitely feel free to try on a few things and send me photos, I'd be happy to help you out. Otherwise, can't wait to see what you and your love choose to wear!
